How Commercial Real Estate Built My Financial Safety Net
Why Every Entrepreneur Must Build a Reliable, Wealth-Generating Plan B Now
I remember watching her closely; she was carefree, lighthearted, cracking jokes. She enjoyed her work. It was fun. She held all of it lightly — an ease I had never experienced. It was intriguing and a bit intoxicating. I wanted it—whatever it was...I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I knew viscerally it was comforting—it was easy, it was peaceful. It was something to aspire to, to mimic. But what was it?
A few months later, after much pondering and trying to figure out her secret sauce, I sat down in her office. It was always disorganized, covered in paper, carrying the faint smell of an old library. I brought her favorite coffee and camped out for a chat. I was on a fact-finding mission: I needed to understand how and why she was so calm in such a dog-eat-dog environment. Nothing fazed her. Nothing raised her blood pressure. And although she was usually late, it wasn’t because she was rushed—it was the opposite—almost like time didn’t exist.
Late that afternoon, we talked about deal mechanics, the psychology of why people do deals, the male-dominated world of brokerage. But what we finally landed on was simpler: how much commercial real estate had given her. Not just her career—her freedom. Her financial freedom.
In that moment, I felt my whole body shift. This was what I had always sought—a financial safety net, security, peace. And the realization that this could work for me too.
As a young entrepreneur, I was quickly learning that in brokerage, income was derived from successfully closed transactions—rarely with any cadence, and certainly with no control of timing. Although I successfully provided solutions for my clients, my compensation didn’t arrive consistently, let alone on a timeframe that was dependable; I did not have bi-monthly direct deposits into my bank account.
There was something in me that needed a financial safety net—not just because I was in a commission-driven career, but because I was an entrepreneur. At the end of the day, the buck stopped with me. I had always been a Plan A, Plan B, Plan C person. Not having a backup if Plan A—my brokerage career—stopped delivering financially? That felt reckless.
I loved the idea of Plan B being a commercial real estate portfolio that delivered consistent income—safety whether I closed a deal or not. That allowed me to let go, instead of react.
What set her apart wasn’t that she let everything roll off her like water off a duck’s back (although she did that very well)—it had to do with the monthly checks she received in her mailbox from her real estate investments. She didn’t have one property—she had dozens. She had slowly built a mini-empire that acted as her financial safety net. She learned early that investing in commercial real estate was a profitable parallel path. Over time, she built not just financial security—but wealth.
And that security enabled her to stay in her career in a lighthearted way, finding the joy every day because she didn’t have the financial pressure of needing to close every single deal just to survive. She could perform from strength—not scarcity.
If there is one thing I want you to remember, it’s this: life is meant to be easier than we make it.
Once I understood her secret sauce—a commercial real estate portfolio that delivered income whether she closed five deals that month or none—I finally understood why she was so carefree.
As an entrepreneur, having a Plan B hasn’t just given me a financial safety net. It’s given me more joy. More stability. More control. And the ability to handle life when it gets hard.
If you've ever wondered whether this path could work for you—whether your Plan B might already be the real estate your business occupies—that’s exactly what I write about here.
And that’s what I want for you.
